Be careful here! My husband and I were planning to work with Northwest Surrogacy based on word-of-mouth and physician referral. Once we were ready to sign the contract, they changed our requirements and fees, not based on their policies, but based on "what they would do in our situation." When we communicated that the changes were confusing, they refused to work with us or even communicate with us.
While they represent themselves as a family agency, it seems they are now in the midst of fast west coast expansion program. It seems they may have more business than they are prepared to handle and will cut intended parents without any notice or recourse--regardless of the vulnerability intended parents find themselves in. I have been informed by others that our recent experience with them is not like how this agency used to operate in the past.
The website indicates that Sandy "is available to intended families and surrogates throughout the process for support and guidance." In our experience, John and Sandy's son Michael--who has a background in technology--was our primary point of contact. No one else was available to answer questions and Michael treated us in a way that felt more like technology than human services. I have never before encountered any customer-service organization that refuses contact if given well-intentioned feedback.
I highly recommend going into conversations here with a back-up plan and an understanding that even though they seem nice and family oriented, they will sever ties if you have any questions or concerns that they do not care to respond to. My friends in the field have called their behavior "unethical" and "inhumane."
Northwest Surrogacy is busy and has a lot going on--in Portland, Seattle, San Francisco, Colorado--so you really are not that important to them in the overall scheme of things. They may drop you with a "sorry" and you may have to start all over. Please do not be dependent on them and make yourselves vulnerable to their whims.
Read MoreI had an amazing experience with NWSC! They answered all of my questions, were available to me when I needed them and really explained every step thoroughly.
Read MoreI absolutely love working with NWSC! From the beginning screening to now, I have every question big or small answered in a timely manner and every detail taken care of for me! Rachel, Molly and Dunja are especially awesome. They made sure to take care of everything legal, financial, paperwork, insurance, etc! I feel like family, everyone remembers little details about you and your family. I never felt like I was just a client to them. I was even sent little gifts throughout my pregnancy. They made all of the tedious stuff easy and it allowed me to completely focus on myself, the intended parents and my pregnancy. If you are thinking of being a surrogate, give them a call! We loved them so much we will be using them for a 2nd surrogacy. Keep being awesome NWSC!!
Read MoreI've been working with NWSC for over a year and a half as a surrogate. From the moment I contacted the agency with questions about the process, and if I would qualify, I have had nothing but a positive experience. Each of my points of contact through my journey have been quick with communication, bent over backwards to problem solve tricky situations with me, and helped me navigate the whole process so that I was completely taken care of. I joined many surrogate support groups through my journey, where I daily interact with and support surrogates - many of whom work with other agencies. After hearing many horror stories from their experiences at the other agencies, I have come to be even more grateful that I chose to work with NWSC where they are surrogate/family focused. If you are interested in becoming a surrogate, or finding a surrogate to help make your family whole, you can't go wrong with NWSC.
